History
Cat breeder Ann Baker originated the Ragdoll breed in the 1960s. Little is known of her practices as she chose to keep them secret, to the point of founding a separate cat registry for this breed. In 1994, a group of breeders left Baker's registry, re-named their cats RagaMuffins (Baker had trademarked Ragdoll) and set out to expand the breeding pool. Through their efforts, RagaMuffins have been outcrossed to Persians, Himalayans and domestic long hairs in addition to back crossing with some Ragdolls. Today in the ACFA (American Cat Fanciers Association), two types of Ragdolls can be foundation registered, but otherwise, there are no accepted outcrosses for RagaMuffins, meaning that each cat is born from two RagaMuffin parents.
Thanks to the work of those first breeders, the RagaMuffin has been accepted by most of the major cat associations.
General Description
RagaMuffins are large cats with medium long coats and rounded oval eyes. They have gently rounded cheeks with puffed whisker pads; along with their open expression and round muzzles, their features produce a sweet expression. One of this breed's main characteristics is its docile nature, so their expression is an indicator of the pleasure of living with one of these attractive cats.
Like many large cats, they are slow to mature, with most not reaching true adulthood until age four. The have a rectangular body type and heavy legs; their hindquarters are the same width as their shoulders, giving them a balanced proportion overall. They have long plumed tails that taper slightly at the tip.
