History
The Korat derives its name from that of the nickname of the province in Thailand where it originated; the full name of that province is Nakhon Ratchasima. In their native land, they are also known as the Si-Sawat cat, which means'colored like the sawat seed' as well as meaning'colored grey green'. "The Cat Book Poems" were written between 1350 and 1650 and the Korat is illustrated therein. The cats were given as gifts of esteem, as they were believed to grant happiness and good fortune. A pair of these cats as a wedding gift was said to ensure happiness for the newlyweds. The breed came to the U.S. thanks to breeder Jean Johnson, who encountered the cats while in Thailand. Her pair, Nara and Dara, are ancestors to many of today's Korats. Sadly, the breed no longer exists in Thailand but thanks to breeders in the U.S. and the U.K. these now-rare cats are continuing.
