History
Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics show felines that look remarkably like the Egyptian Mau, so it surprises many to learn that today's breed actually calls Italy its Country of Origin!

Nathalie Troubetskoy emigrated from Russia to Italy. While living there, she became interested in the spotted street cats of Cairo, Egypt, ultimately importing a female she mated to a local (Italian) tom. Today's Egyptian Mau is naturally spotted thanks to Troubetskoy's breeding choices.

General Description
A medium-sized well-muscled cat, the Mau is neither cobby nor foreign. Their legs are striped and end in dainty small paws. Their large eyes are gooseberry green. The breed is thought to be the fastest of all domestic cats: they have been clocked at more than 30 miles per hour according to some owners.

The Egyptian Mau is the only domestic cat with naturally occurring spots.

Those spots can be large or small or something in between, but they must be randomly placed and distinct from the lighter background color. Dramatic tabby markings include the'M' on the forehead and mascara lines from the eyes to the cheeks. Legs and tail sport multiple bars and rings. At least one necklace adorns the chest area. The cat's body possesses the lean and elegant lines of the cats in Egyptian paintings. Natural athletes, Maus have a loose pouch of skin just before the hind legs that allows for extra extension in running and jumping.

Health and Care
The Mau coat is fairly short and nearly maintenance free, although combing will reduce shedding. Owners must avoid vigorous brushing, which can'erase' the spots on the ticking at the end of the hair shaft. Their beautiful coats can be maintained with nothing more than a chamois or silk scarf to enhance gloss.

The ideal Mau owner pays attention to the cat and gives it lots of special playtime. These cats usually make excellent travelers and are easily leash-trained. Maus demonstrate high intelligence: many know the names of their toys and fetch them when asked. Make sure children know how to properly handle cats because Maus tend to disappear when faced with uncomfortable situations.

Maus are known to make chortling sounds when they are happy and many wiggle their tails as well.
